Smokey Eye Makeup traditionally uses black and intense grays to create a heavy “smokey” look that is dramatic and sexy. You can also create a smokey eye effect that is a softer look by using less less intense colors. It has the same effect of dramatically accentuating the eyes, but is more subtle and can be worn for daytime as well.
You can use any color palette for your smokey eye look. You need three eye shadows that are the same color family so the shadow will gradually lessen in intensity. The darker (or more intense) your natural coloring, the darker you can go with your smokey eye. Browns and grays can be used, but so can purples or greens. Pick the color that looks best on you and go for it!
How to apply Smokey Eye Makeup
Step 1 – Prep your eyelid
Flawless blending is the most important factor in the smoky eye look. Apply a coat of powder, foundation, concealer, makeup primer or for a long lasting look use an eyelid primer like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Eyeshadow Base.
Step 2 – Apply eyeliner
Line your upper and lower eye lids at the lash line. Eyeliner can make your eyes look smaller. If you have small eyes already, you may want to line the outer two-thirds only.

Step 3 – Apply the lightest eye shadow shade
Using a brush (it is much easier to blend with a brush instead of a sponge applicator), place the lightest color over the entire eye lid. You can also place a small amount on the inner corner of your eye, in a > shape around your tear duct. This will brighten your eyes.
Step 4 – Apply the Medium Color
Apply your medium color from the lash line to just above the crease and blend well. If you have flat eyes with no discernible crease, feel for the top of your eyeball and stop there.

Step 5 – Apply the Darkest Color
Use the darkest color at the lash line, gradually fading up to the crease. Blend well with the medium color. It should softly fade from dark to light. Next apply the darkest color over the eyeliner, using it to smudge the line. You may want to try the medium color on the bottom line instead of the darkest color. You can use a Q-tip to smudge further.
Step 6 – Apply Several Coats of Mascara
No eye drama is complete without lots of mascara!

Step 7 – Finish Your Look
You want all of the spotlight on your eyes; finish your look with soft or neutral lips and cheeks. I love a nude or soft pink glossy lips and a soft color for blush.
