When you see someone with a great make up job, you may well find yourself wondering about how to apply eye makeup so it comes out looking like “THAT!” Everyone has had days where your eye shadow seems uneven either in darkness or in blended coloring.

The answer to that specific problem boils down to blending. Always begin applying your shadow using the lightest shade you have, and then layer in the next darker color. You can always add more color, but taking excess tones away is difficult and leaves blotches in otherwise lovely eye shadow.

The steps to applying eye makeup are: concealer and/or highlighter, eye shadow primer, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara.

Don’t rush your makeup applications. Practice on a day when you don’t need to go anywhere in particular. Try different color combinations – both with and without eyeliner. Make notes of the ones you really like. If you have a digital camera, take pictures of your results and use that as a template when you’re wondering how to apply eye shadow again to get that exact (or very close) results.

Another big boost to showing off your eyes is choosing the right colors. You can certainly go with an eye shadow that matches your eye color. But if you’re looking for impact and boldness – go to the opposite side of the color wheel such as using yellow/gold with blue eyes. Gold is also a great color if you have hazel eyes particularly on a brown backdrop.

Speaking of backdrop – if you want your eye makeup to last all day long with the least amount of smudging seriously consider getting a primer. Just like when you paint a surface, primer prepares your skin. The result is a very smooth look that doesn’t fade even if you have a very active lifestyle. By the way you can get primers in shimmer tones if you want to give your eyes a little more glow without going for full-out glitter.

Some of the techniques for how to apply eye shadow depends on the look you want. For example, the smoky eye is always in fashion. For this type of finished appearance you don’t extend the color farther than your lid, with an accent below your lower lashes. For a little more drama take a white eye pencil and put a dot of it right near your tear ducts – it catches the light and draws more attention to your eyes.

Last but not least – be careful of highlighter. This is particularly true if you have fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes. Choosing the right colors offsets this, as does using primer – but stick with the “less is more” philosophy to maintain that youthful appearance.

Eyes are one of the most expressive features on a person’s face. They reveal a lot about a person, so when you’re choosing eye makeup for green eyes you want to make sound choices that really make your eyes the star of the show. Ultimately the biggest problem most people seem to have is figuring out the whole complimentary color advice that nearly every beauty expert talks about. What that means is simply finding colors on the opposite side of the color wheel in terms of eye makeup.

There are a variety of options for green eyed gals including purple. Keep this hue on the light side. You can pair it easily with either black or purple liner if you want, and clean crisp mascara to round everything out.

If purple isn’t your cup of tea there are certainly other color options in eye makeup for green eyes. Pink, brown, wine tones – all of these create a magnificent backdrop leaving your green eyes as the true centerpiece. When you go with these colors consider adding similar tones or bronze by way of lipstick and rouge.

When you’re getting ready for a night on the town, go ahead and extend your eye liner, winging it a bit toward the end. This creates a more dramatic look no matter the color pallet you’ve chosen for the evening. Remember, however, that you can be a little bolder by night – go for the gusto with shimmery gold eye shadow.

In terms of what NOT to wear – amber, jade and orange tones are iffy at best with green eyes, yellow rarely works. Blue is another tricky color depending on the shade. Turquoise might be ok as is light blue sometimes. The key is looking for a color that doesn’t detract from your eyes, making them look dull. If you try one color on one lid, and another on your second lid – you’ll pretty quickly begin to see the difference between lifeless looking eyes and ones that sparkle.

If you’re a fan of the smoky look in eye makeup for green eyes, you can pull it off by using grey and silver. This combination is very classic and romantic, best suited for evening engagements.

HINT: it’s always a good idea to have a few test runs on the makeup combination you’ve chosen. Put it on and wear it for several hours of day light and see how it wears and looks as the day goes on. Do the same thing at night. That way when an important occasion comes up you already know what adjustments to make so your eye makeup lasts as long as you do.

Mascara is nothing terribly new. Like most cosmetics the history of mascara reaches far back in history, dating to written records from Egypt as early as 4,000 BCE. Then, as now, people hoped to use various substances to make them more alluring. In some cases the makeup had religious and magical connotations too – such as protecting the wearer from the evil eye, or marking someone’s rank in the temple.

The first version of mascara was something called Kohl. This blend mixed soot with malachite or galena and honey so that the mixture would stick, but could be spread on the skin and eyelashes. For the elite houses, crocodile droppings also went into the mix, which helped keep the makeup in place once dry. It wasn’t until Rome fell that Kohl went out of favor in Europe. Nonetheless it still found a market along the Middle Eastern spice and trade routes.

As with any such product, mascara’s popularity waxed and waned over the years, making a comeback in the Western world during the Victorian era. Many women spent hours out of every day beautifying themselves, particularly among the wealthier households. Having thick, long, dark eyelashes was considered a mark of loveliness. So, women around the United States could be found at any given time in the kitchen mixing together ash from the fire and elderberry juice, which went on while it was still warm.

In the history of mascara it was during the 19th century that something closer to modern mascara appeared from two different people. One was Eugene Rimmel, a chemist who used petroleum jelly in his cosmetic preparations. The second was T.L. Williams who also made mascara from petroleum and coal as a gift for his sister named Maybel. From this humble beginning Maybelline was born. These basic products remained the cornerstone of the cosmetic industry until after World War 1.

By the end of the war women were ready for new products. In answer to that consumer cry, Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Ardin both launched brands of cosmetics each of which included mascara. The rivalry between these two companies, combined with the motion picture industry portrait of classic actresses with long eyelashes, and suddenly mascara earned a firm foothold as a viable beauty product.

Up until the 1930’s the cosmetic industry remained untouched by FDA regulations. That situation ended after a permanent eye dye caused blindness in several women along with one death. In 1938 the FDA began regulating cosmetics. Another change for mascara came in the mid-1950s when Rubinstein invented lotion-type mascara sold in tubes with an applicator. This was much closer to what we utilize today.

Modern mascara is much lighter, cleaner and much more easily applied than those in the history of mascara, something for which women are very grateful. We also have the benefits various colors of mascara, waterproof blends, and even some with glitter!

Choosing eye shadow for hazel eyes may seem daunting at first, but it need not be. There are some very simple guidelines that help you look fantastic and really show off all the hints of color in your eyes. A lot of women reach immediately for brown hues, which is fine but you don’t need to remain colorless. A lot of eye shadows intended for green and blue eyes will work for you too.

Looking to the neutral tones first, however, since they’re popular and go with whatever you’re wearing every time – beige coupled with a very pale pink makes an inviting look as does using cream tones. You can also go darker into gray and black, but those are best suited to evening events.

While the color pink may have taken you off guard as an eye shadow for hazel eyes, purple also works very well. Look to the full spectrum of purple shades for something that’s distinctly YOU and if possible pair that with an accessory of the same color. For a little more flair, add lavender or plum eye liner.

What about metallic? You can work that gold girl! In fact, you can wear nearly any shade of yellow you want on your eyes so play with a variety of colors. During the holidays, however, choosing the metallic gold let’s your eyes shine with all the little flecks of color therein.

Hazel eye coloring can vary from person to person. Depending on the predominant color in your eyes green eye shadow might really make those peppers pop. You might have to blend this with a hint of brown or pink go get just the right tone – so don’t be afraid to experiment.

One word of caution – blue probably isn’t the best choice in eye shadow for hazel eyes. A lot here depends on your skin tone. During the day hours you might be able to use it sparingly, but in darker lighting your eyes will fade to the backdrop of blue eye shadow.

By comparison a sparkling sliver looks lovely with hazel eyes. Use a darker brown in the eye crease and silver near your lashes. You can certainly add liner if desired – this makes a great holiday look too!

If you find yourself uncertain at any point – you can’t go wrong with returning to the basic brown family. Create a smoky eye, add a little liner, some matching mascara – and those eyes can’t help but be seen and appreciated.

Celebrities with Hazel Eyes

Rihanna has gorgeous hazel eyes, which she frequently emphasizes with dramatic eye makeup – mascara & eye liner and a softer blush and lip color.

I love how Hilary Duff plays up her beautiful eyes here - this is a great eye shadow shade for hazel eyes!

Camilla Belle has hazel eyes along with very dark hair and fair skin. This look is very heavy on the eye liner, but it pulls all the focus to her eyes.

Tyra Banks is wearing pink eye shadow in this picture and her eye liner is very light – it looks like only the top lids are lined – this is a softer look and it makes her eye look much lighter in color.

Kate Beckinsale plays up here eyes by lining her inner rims. Other than her dark eye liner, all of her other makeup is very soft and she and her eyes look really beautiful!

Did you notice will all of our celebrities, there is not a look of drama or color with their eye shadow for hazel eyes? Eye one of them has a soft taupe to pink color eye shadow and most of them have distinct dark eye liner and mascara. They all also have soft glossy lips.

My current eye shadow has a gorgeous pinkish – taupe-ish shimmer color that I think would look divine on hazel eyes – you can read about it here – Smashbox Eyelight Eye Shadow

What is the Best Eye Shadow for Brown Eyes? Good news! Brown eyed girls can wear any color eye shadow and look good. you have the only eye color that can even match your eye shadow to your clothing and look great doing it.

OK, so you can wear any color. But which color looks best? That depends on the color and intensity of your eyes and your skin tone. You want to match the intensity of your eye makeup to the intensity of your skin tone/coloring. So if you have very light skin, stick with lighter colors. If you are darker, so with darker, more intense makeup.

The universal Eye Shadow for Brown Eyes colors are brown family neutrals – taupe, beige, brown, even gold. If you wear the same look everyday, invest in these colors. If you are a one color at a time, the same color everyday girl, stick with a pretty taupe to medium brown or gold. If you use two colors, apply a darker shade in the crease and outer corner.

Other eye shadow shades that are great with brown eyes are purples – from light lilac to plums to dark, vivid purple, grays – from light to dark charcoal, pinks – including darker mauves, greens – especially the darker hunter green colors, even dark blue.

Most brown eyed ladies have cool skin tones and look better when sticking to cool colored eye shadows. Pinks, corals and blues in a warmer hue won’t look flattering at all, so stick to neutrals or cool colors.

With the metallics all the rage, brown eyes look great in all of them – silver, gold, copper, bronze – anything goes!

Soft gold is a stunning color, especially if your eyes are a lighter brown color. If your eyes are so dark they are almost black, add a lighter touch to your eye makeup to lighten up your look.

Brown eyes can also pull of the traditional dark smokey eye look easier than many others.

Celebrity Photos - Eye Shadow for Brown Eyes

I love this look on Sandra Bullock – she goes with lighter eye shadow and lip gloss, which plays out so nicely against her dark eyes and hair, and works perfectly with her pale skin. I love the gray/silver eye shadow on her – which coordinates perfectly with her earrings. Notice how the eyeliner and mascara finish off her look perfectly and the emphasis is all on her eyes.

Eva Longoria has a somewhat darker skin tone and goes with darker eye shadow. This is just a beautiful, perfectly made up brown eye. It looks like she is picking up the light taupe color of her dress in the lightest shade of her eye makeup. Also finished with perfectly lined eyes and mascara.

Glee actress Jayma Mays has much softer coloring all the way around and goes with a neutral, nude eye and eyeliner and mascara. I think she would look much better with a lighter touch on the eyeliner – but otherwise she looks really pretty. I also found two more looks that are completely different, so you can compare three different eye shadow for brown eyes looks on the same person.

Fellow Glee actress Naya Rivera has much darker coloring and very dark eyes. Notice how the lighter eye shadow – including white just under the brow lighten up her eyes. Also she has much less eyeliner than most of the other brown eyed beauties.

One more Glee beauty, Dianna Argon has totally different coloring and a totally different look. She emphasizes her lighter brown eyes with a blue-gray. She also goes lighter on the eyeliner. All of her makeup is very soft and it really looks good on her.

gown – mint green on the left and taupe on the right (sorry you can’t see the gown – it is strapless).

The best Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes is makeup that emphasizes your beautiful eyes, not your makeup.

The biggest factor in determining your makeup look is your own skin tone and coloring. If you have light hair and pale skin, you need to stick with a light hand. If you have darker coloring, you can pull off a more dramatic look.

Eye Shadow for Blue Eyes

Pinks, Peaches and Bronzes are the best eye shadow colors to emphasize your baby blues. These are colors that are opposite blue in the color spectrum and will make the blue pop (as they say).

Choose your shade of pink, peach and bronze Eye Shadow for Blue Eyes based on the intensity of your eye and overall coloring. For example, lighter coloring can go with lighter pinks and apricots, darker can go with mauve colors.

Other colors that compliment blue eyes are purples and greys, as well as neutrals in soft brown and taupe.

If you use two or more colors of eye shadow, you can apply pink or peach all over and then a darker violet, lilac or purple or dark grey or brown in the crease and/or corner. This is give your eye shadow some dept, while still emphasizing the color of your eyes.

Metallics and uber shiny and sparkly eye shadows are ver popular right now – you can go with bronze, gold or anything in the gray or silver family. If you have very light blue eyes and pale skin, stick with the lighter shades.

By looking at the two photos above, you can see the same model with two very different Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes looks. In the first photo she has a very neutral, natural look. Her bronze eye shadow and eye makeup is very subtle, but it draws all the attention to her eyes. In the second photo the look is much more dramatic and the makeup is heavier. The eye makeup still draws attention to her eyes, but you also notice the eye shadow.

At the end of the day, there are no eye shadow police and there are no hard and fast rules. In the past you have probably been told not to wear blue eye shadow. Well, those rules no longer apply and there this an endless variety of eye shadow colors from which to choose. If you are a one look girl, find your best colors above and stick with it. If you are a one eyeshadow color, the same every or almost everyday, stick with bronze.

If you like to be creative and try different Eye Shadow for Blue Eyes looks frequently, go for it and have fun!

Mascara - Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes

Although black is the universal mascara color, if your natural lashes are light black will probably look too harsh for you. My favorite mascara color is navy blue – it looks dark and doesn’t scream “BLUE”, but it can really add a little something extra to your look. Brown is another option and should probably be your first choice if your coloring is very fair.

Eyeliner - Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes

Eyeliner is the secret to a great looking eye. The same color guidelines apply as with mascara – black, navy blue or brown. If you have red hair you will probably look better with browns. Colored and metallic eyeliners are popular now – feel free to experiment and have fun!

Celebrities – Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes

Taylor Swift has pretty blue eyes and a much lighter coloring. She usually goes with makeup that emphasizes her eyes. Her eyes are on the small side and although her eyeshadow colors change often, she almost has noticeable eyeliner and false eyelashes.

She made beauty headlines when she was one of the first celebrities to embrace the blue eye shadow trend. It is not one of my favorite makeup looks for her, but hey she is young, successful and has to dress up a lot – why not have a little fun!

Days of our Lives actress Nadia Bjorlin has beautiful blue eyes – her Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes shows them off here with bronze eye shadow, black eyeliner and nude lips. This is a great example of how dark eyeliner can draw attention to your eyes.

Actress Ashley Benson has beautiful eyes that are spotlighted in this photo with eyeliner and mascara. As you can see here, you can’t even see what color eye shadow she is wearing – it is the eyeliner and mascara that draw your attention in to her eyes.

January Jones goes for a colorful smokey eye look – you can tell it has blues and greens. I think it looks very pretty, but it makes her look older when compared to a lighter makeup look.

Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes Recommendations

One of my favorite eye shadows for blue eyes is Smashbox Highlights in Beam. Look for pretty pinks, peaches, bronze and nudes. You can go with shimmer or matte.

Stick with black eyeliner and mascara Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes unless you have very light coloring (ie blonde eyelashes) and black looks too harsh – stick with navy blue or brown mascara and navy, brown or charcoal eye liner.

If you are over 40 – 45 and have those dreaded signs of aging around your eyes, black mascara is fine but black eyeliner may emphasize that – try a dark brown, navy blue of charcoal liner.

If you do emphasize your eyes with your makeup, go with a softer blush and lip color – otherwise you’ll just look like you are wearing too much makeup.

A few months ago, I picked up a Smashbox Eyelights Eyeshadow in Beam. I was looking for a pretty bronze and I was also intrigued by the pinks shade in this collection. Little did i know that this would quickly become one of my favorite eye shadow palettes of all time. I havdn’t paid any attention at all to the “eyelight” name – but that is just what these shadows do.

I had put them on & liked them, but was suprised later told me that my eye makeup was the “best ever” and she has seen a lot of different products on me.

I started using it more and paying attention and I really have no explanation except these shadows do, for the first time in any product I have found, give you that (used to death phrase) “lit from within look”. They really do. You don’t even notice the shadows – they just some how impart a gorgeous glow about your eyes.

The Beam trio includes the shades luminous gold, copper, and bronze.

In addition to Beam, there are three other trios:

Strobe – shimmering pearl, ocean blue, and golden brown

Flash – peachy pink, shimmering burgundy, and mossy green

Smokebox – intense black, soft pewter, warm beige

My Pictures & Swatches:

These are the Beam trio.

I am surprised, amazed, disappointed that this line of shadows seems to be disappearing from the market – maybe they were a limited edition. I will be looking for something comprable – but I doubt I can find it, because these are like magic, somehow.

Right now the Eyelights Eye Shadows are available in some shades at QVC, Amazon and Beauty.com.

Need Mascara Tips? No matter how long you’ve worn makeup there are going to be days when it simply doesn’t go on right. Mascara in particular can be too thick, clumpy or smudgy.

Here are some mascara tips to help you get perfect lashes every time:

If you want your eyelashes to look longer, make sure to pay close attention to the mascara at the base of your lashes. If that’s not put on evenly, nothing else you do will make your lashes look long.

Always take the time to separate your lashes. Just a little twist as you move from bottom to top with your mascara wand should do the trick

Don’t forget to run the mascara wand over both the inside and the outside of the lash for evenness.

Clumps and Bumps:

If your key problem is clumpy mascara you can try a couple of things. First it may simply be time to get new mascara. Generally as mascara dries and gets old, it also gets more finicky and clumpy.

Secondly, check your mascara wand. It might be goopy. If so, give it a thorough cleaning then try again.

Third, make sure you’re not applying a second coat of mascara before the first coat dries. If you do – it WILL clump.

If its not the age of the mascara or the condition of the wand, and your first coat of mascara is fully dry, then get yourself a lash comb to brush those clumps out.

Mascara tips and tricks from Pros

People who work with makeup regularly suggest that you try using more than one type of mascara. Put on a light coating of mascara that’s intended to lengthen, then another light coat of thickening mascara.

Beyond this makeup artists play a lot with colored mascaras so you could actually have one color at the base of your lashes and something different at your tips, or use the two-types of mascara for lengthening and thickness in two colors to give more depth of hue.

Finally don’t under estimate the importance of an eyelash curler. This opens up your eyes and makes them look wider. If you heat the curler just before you use it, you’ll find the overall effect much prettier.

Smudges:

You can now buy foundation powder and eyelash primer for your eyes. This not only helps your eye make up last longer but keeps the mascara under your eye from smudging as easily because the skin there won’t be as oily.

If you find you always smudge your bottom lashes, hold a folded tissue in place while you apply the mascara. Works like a charm every time! For those little dots that appear on your upper eye lids – remember to keep your eye partially closed after applying your mascara. About 30 seconds should do the trick – no dots!

Finally remember to buy waterproof mascara.

By following these mascara tips you should find that you’re successful with mascara application more consistently, and have much richer looking lashes that last as long as you do!

Smokey Eye Makeup traditionally uses black and intense grays to create a heavy “smokey” look that is dramatic and sexy. You can also create a smokey eye effect that is a softer look by using less less intense colors. It has the same effect of dramatically accentuating the eyes, but is more subtle and can be worn for daytime as well.

You can use any color palette for your smokey eye look. You need three eye shadows that are the same color family so the shadow will gradually lessen in intensity. The darker (or more intense) your natural coloring, the darker you can go with your smokey eye. Browns and grays can be used, but so can purples or greens. Pick the color that looks best on you and go for it!

How to apply Smokey Eye Makeup

Step 1 – Prep your eyelid

Flawless blending is the most important factor in the smoky eye look. Apply a coat of powder, foundation, concealer, makeup primer or for a long lasting look use an eyelid primer like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Eyeshadow Base.

Step 2 – Apply eyeliner

Line your upper and lower eye lids at the lash line. Eyeliner can make your eyes look smaller. If you have small eyes already, you may want to line the outer two-thirds only.

Step 3 – Apply the lightest eye shadow shade

Using a brush (it is much easier to blend with a brush instead of a sponge applicator), place the lightest color over the entire eye lid. You can also place a small amount on the inner corner of your eye, in a > shape around your tear duct. This will brighten your eyes.

Step 4 – Apply the Medium Color

Apply your medium color from the lash line to just above the crease and blend well. If you have flat eyes with no discernible crease, feel for the top of your eyeball and stop there.

Step 5 – Apply the Darkest Color

Use the darkest color at the lash line, gradually fading up to the crease. Blend well with the medium color. It should softly fade from dark to light. Next apply the darkest color over the eyeliner, using it to smudge the line. You may want to try the medium color on the bottom line instead of the darkest color. You can use a Q-tip to smudge further.

Step 6 – Apply Several Coats of Mascara

No eye drama is complete without lots of mascara!

Step 7 – Finish Your Look

You want all of the spotlight on your eyes; finish your look with soft or neutral lips and cheeks. I love a nude or soft pink glossy lips and a soft color for blush.

If you’re looking for formal eye makeup tips a lot of times you can find great ideas in magazines. Celebrities and models alike have great stylists that create everything from a seductive or a cat’s eye to dramatic impact eyes.

With this in mind, one of the key elements in preparing for formal eye makeup is figuring out your goal. Perhaps you’ll find the perfect image from the pictures you review or minimally a concept, but ask yourself – what am I trying to say with my eyes?

Do you want a classic look?
If so start with a neutral eye color palette (see How to Apply Eye Shadow), select the best colors for your individual eye color (see Eye Shadow by Eye Color). Also Eye Liner is a must, see How to Apply Eye Liner and finish your look with Mascara.

Do you want a dramatic look?
Go with darker eye shadows that compliment your eye color. Consider the Smokey Eye look. Eye Liner is a must, see How to Apply Eye Liner, will greatly enhance your look. Don’t forget lots of black mascara, or consider false eye lashes.

Do you want a romantic look?
Follow the same suggestions for the classic look, choosing soft romantic colors that compliment your eye color, such as pink or peach. Choose a shimmering shadow to use as a highlighter. Choose softer colors for your cheeks and lips.

Are you hoping for a theatrical impression?
Go all the way with a dark Smokey Eye, or opt for Cat Eye Makeup, Gothic Eye Makeup or even Egyptian Eye Makeup.

Next consider your overall color theme. Even with these Formal Eye Makeup Tips, your eyes aren’t alone on your face. You need to pick out accompanying colors for blush, lipstick, and even foundation so that everything works together harmoniously. One of the biggest secrets to good formal eye makeup is that it all comes together cohesively to express your mood and the occasion.

A third question to ponder is what part of your face you want to highlight. Just because you’re putting on formal eye makeup doesn’t mean that your lips, cheekbones, hair, or curve of your neck need to fade to the backdrop. You’ll need to plan your eye makeup so that your best features shine. If that happens to be your eyes, great, but if not your eye makeup should be toned down just enough to address other focal points.

Here are some more Formal Eye Makeup Tips:

Start with an even foundation. Without this, the rest of your eye makeup will look messy no matter how carefully you apply it.

Find a concealer that blends perfectly with your complexion to hide dark circles. Use a makeup pad to blend this with your foundation.

A little shine is fine but don’t overdo it – formal is rarely flashy

Use a white eye pencil or white shimmering eye shadow (very well blended) around the inner corners of your eyes to brighten and highlight your eyes.

Use an Eye Makeup Primer, so you will look as good when you leave as you did when you arrived!

Practice ahead of time! It make several tries to perfect your look and technique.

The beauty of approaching your eye makeup in this manner is that when you’re done, this very basic look can easily be kicked up a bit if you find it’s too “quiet” for your tastes. Perhaps add a little glue-on star near one eye, or a hint of glitter in your hair. With good Formal Eye Makeup Application, you can round out your look any way you want!
